Construction & Built Environment
Civil Engineering
Begin a civil and built-environment pathway in Chennai, then progress towards infrastructure, surveying and construction degrees abroad.
Overview
Engineers build the world we live in: the machines that move it, the power that drives it, and the infrastructure that holds it together. This programme prepares you to build what comes next.
It is a programme for practical, analytical minds: those who want to design, test and deliver real solutions, and to shape the industries of the future.
Your journey begins with two years at KCIC, Chennai, earning a UK-regulated Higher National Diploma in your chosen discipline: Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering. Engineering mathematics, science, design and professional practice form your foundation, before your specialism takes shape.
Then, a final year in England at Sheffield Hallam University, rated Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework for the outstanding quality of its teaching and graduate outcomes. In Sheffield, a city with a proud engineering heritage, you complete a full honours degree with advanced specialist study, state-of-the-art laboratories and an individual project of your own.
You graduate with a BEng (Hons) from Sheffield Hallam University, ready to launch your engineering career.
Three Majors, One Journey
A shared engineering foundation. A choice of discipline.
Every major shares the same final-year project structure: Project Management and Scoping, then Project Implementation, your individual research project and the apex of your degree.
BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering (HND in Mechanical Engineering)
Advanced thermodynamics, structural analysis and numerical simulation, including computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis, alongside sustainable engineering design: from concept, through prototyping, to optimisation.
BEng (Hons) Electrical Engineering (HND in Electrical Engineering)
Automation, robotics and control systems engineering, alongside power electronics, power systems and renewable energy: the technologies that power everything from mobile phones to electric cars and national grids. Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (HND in Civil Engineering)
Structural engineering and foundation design, alongside water and transportation engineering, including how optimisation algorithms and artificial intelligence are being applied to transport.
The Sheffield Hallam Way
Where engineering is learnt by applying it.
Applied learning is the ethos at the heart of every Sheffield Hallam course. You learn from professionals active in their fields, gaining real-world skills through laboratory work, projects and problem-based learning.
You work on live projects with industry. Previous mechanical engineering students have solved a manufacturing challenge alongside process engineers at the McLaren Composite Technology Centre. Civil engineering students explore the industry through site visits and engagement with the Institution of Civil Engineers and the IET.
Beyond the classroom: guest lectures from employers and professional bodies, national design competitions, and the SHU Racing Team, which designs, builds and races cars against other universities at Silverstone.
Here, every lesson leads to the workplace.
